Schooner Roseway Open for Tours
Thursday-Friday, October 23-24, 2008, 9 am-4 pm
Independence Seaport Museum hosts the National Historic Landmark Schooner Roseway at its dock in the Penn's Landing Basin October 23-24. The Roseway, designed and built in 1925 as a fishing yacht, will be open to the public for FREE tours both days. The historic ship, part of the World Ocean School in Camden, Maine, is on her way south to her winter port in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Meet the Roseway's crew and hear about the educational programs that focus on sail training, community building, and core curriculum areas of science, math, history, and language arts.

Sail on the Skipjack Sigsbee!

Enjoy a lovely fall sail on the Delaware River aboard the Sigsbee, a 50-foot traditional Chesapeake Bay skipjack. Space is limited so reserve your seat today by contacting the Membership Department at membership@phillyseaport.org or 215.413.8626. Each household can reserve up to five seats. Children must be in fourth grade or above.

Skin & Bones -- Tattoos in the Life of the American Sailor
New Featured Exhibit!

An original exhibit exploring the origins, functions and significance of tattoos in American sailors’ lives, as well as how the art of tattooing has spread throughout society, impacting not only the body, but fashion, décor, and many forms of contemporary art. The exhibit will include traditional and modern tattooing tools, flash, tattoo-related art, historic photographs, personal stories of tattoo artists and tattooed sailors, etc.

Behind-the-Scenes Tours of
Cruiser Olympia & Submarine Becuna
First Saturday of every month, 11-3 pm
Explore areas of the Cruiser Olympia, Admiral Dewey's Spanish-American War flagship, and the World War II Submarine Becuna, normally off limits to the public. See the Olympia's triple expansion steam engines, boiler room, and working ash hoist, and the Becuna's conning tower.
